MSHA was founded in 1957 and incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1987. It is a member owned and managed volunteer organization with an Executive Board, nine Standing Committees and 11 Ad Hoc Committees. MSHA advocates for the professional interests of its members and the individuals they serve, as well as provides a forum for the exchange of professional information and ideas.

 

Amy Glaspey, President

​

Amy Glaspey, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is Professor in the School of Speech, Language, Hearing, and Occupational Sciences at the University of Montana in Missoula, MT.  She is passionate about research for speech sound disorders, particularly assessment. Dr. Glaspey has recently published the Glaspey Dynamic Assessment of Phonology, a nationally normed standardized test. She is director of the SPEAK lab (Speech, Phonology, Early Articulation and Knowledge lab). In addition to her work on dynamic assessment, she collaborates on cross-linguistic research of speech sound disorders with Andrea MacLeod at the University of Alberta. She studies the scholarship of teaching and learning for college students.  Dr. Glaspey’s courses include Phonological Development and Phonetics at the undergraduate level, and Articulation and Phonological Disorders at the graduate level. In addition, she provides clinical education in the DeWit RiteCare Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic with preschool and school-age children with speech sound disorder in the SPARK Clinic (Speech, Phonology, and Articulation Remediation for Kids).  Dr. Glaspey loves to travel and is working on visiting every State Park in Montana! 

 

 

Shelby Midboe, Immediate Past President, Public Policy Chair

Shelby Midboe is a 2013 graduate of the CSD program of The University of Montana, a member of the self-named the "BCE" (Best Cohort Ever).  She is in her eighth year as the SLP at Target Range School District in Missoula, and completed her Supervisory Endorsement in Special Education in November 2020. She works PRN for Infinity Rehabilitation in SNFs in addition to her school job, and is glad to have the opportunity to practice with clients across the lifespan. She served many years as the chair of the MSHA Scholarship committee, as the MSHA Secretarry for 3 years, was MSHA President-Elect in 2020 and is a member of a group of school SLPs who are writing OPI guidelines for school speech therapists.  In her spare time, she enjoys taking portraits, river recreation, camping, playing volleyball, cross country skiing and hanging out with friends as often as possible. She is married and has a son who is a Freshman at Whitworth University in Spokane, WA, and a daughter who graduated from UM in November 2020 and is now an aspiring photographer in the Seattle, WA area.

Christina Hansen, Secretary & Treasurer

 

Christina Hansen earned her master's degree in speech-language pathology with an emphasis in bilingual and multicultural issues from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. She then traded mosquitoes for mountains when moving to Montana, where she works for TinyEye Therapy Solutions. In 2018, she graduated from ASHA's Leadership Development Program, during which she collaborated with the district's English Language Learner Coordinator to formalize special education referral procedures for bilingual students. When not working, she can be found with her nose in good book, her hands an a ball of bread dough, or her feet on a trail in the back country.

Bridget Loomis, Speech-Language Member at Large

 

Bridget earned her master's degree in speech-language pathology from the University of Montana in 2016. Since graduating, she has been working in the acute care setting and currently is the lead SLP at Benefis Health System in Great Falls. Bridget's primary areas of interest include dysphagia assessment, including both MBS and FEES, critical care, severe traumatic brain injury, palliative/end of life care, and NICU. She has completed the SPEAK OUT! Program for treating Parkinson's disease, the IGNITE Program through the National Association of Neonatal Therapists, and the AmpCare Effective Swallow Protocol training to provide neuromuscular electrical stimulation to appropriate dysphagia patients. Additionally, Bridget brought a FEES training course to Montana in 2018 through Carolina Speech Pathology, was a MSHA presenter in 2019 regarding the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI), and currently represents OT/PT/SLP on the Benefis Stroke Council. New to the MSHA board this year, Bridget is interested in increasing interest and collaboration of medical SLPs across the state. In her spare time, Bridget enjoys spending time with family (especially her baby, Finn), traveling (pre-COVID anyway), rafting, camping, hiking, and playing volleyball.

Barbara Doughty, Chair of Scholarship Committee

 

Barbara Doughty earned her Bachelors of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Arts in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Washington State University.  Her graduate school research project comparing clinical and instrumental dysphagia evaluation methods was a Poster Session for the 1998 Annual Speech Language & Hearing Association Convention.  She has maintained the Certificate of Clinical Competence in her field from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) for twenty-two years. Barbara worked in the medical setting for fifteen years,  provided supervision for graduate students and CFY candidates,  and represented medical speech therapists on Benefis Healthcare’s Stroke Council for five years.  She collaborated with Quality Life Concepts, Inc. to provide outreach and telemedicine services for clients in northcentral Montana.  Barbara was instrumental in the development of the Benefis Voice Clinic. Since 2013, she has been providing speech therapy services at Great Falls Public Schools.  She actively participated in the writing of the Office of Public Instruction’s Guidelines for the Provision of Speech-Language Pathology under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  She also was Associate Coordinator of Speech Therapy from Fall 2017 through Summer 2019.  She is incoming Chair of the Scholarship Committee and a member of the Continuing Education Committee.  Barbara is currently completing the endorsement program for Special Education Administration.

Lezlie Pearce Hopper, MSH Foundation Liaison, President of the MSH Foundation

 

Lezlie and Warren moved to Helena, Montana in 2015 from Oregon.  They grew up in Great Falls and always planned to return.  Lezlie has been a Speech/Language Pathologist for 43 years and worked in a variety of schools, early intervention settings and in the graduate program at the U of O. She served  ages 4 thru 7 in East Helena School district for more than a year prior to her second retirement.  Her plans are to continue in private practice once it is safe to do so. Lezlie served twice as President of the Oregon Speech Language Hearing Association and served for seven years on the OR Licensure Board and ASHA committees.  Lezlie was privileged to serve as President of the MT Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has worked closely with the Public Policy/Political Action Committee. She is now serving as liaison to MSHA for the MSHA Foundation Board. She hopes to continue her volunteer activities with MSHA. In her spare time Lezlie enjoys their cabin on the Smith and time with Roscoe.  She very much looks forward to playing with grandchildren in Missouri.

 

Julie Vetter, ASHA/MSHA CEU Coordinator

Julie Vetter is the MSHA Continuing Education Administrator for ASHA CEUs and MSHA renewal units. She lives in Missoula with her husband and teen boys. She works in the school setting as an Autism Specialist for middle and high school students. Her other strong interest area is in the science of reading and evidence-based literacy instruction and intervention.
