2021 MSHA Convention – Thursday Session Descriptions/Learning Outcomes:

 

Session Title: “Motivating Adolescents to Participate in Contextualized Literacy Intervention via Telepractice”

Presenter(s): Ginger Collins

 

Description: Motivation often declines as children reach adolescence. Poor motivation inhibits participation and engagement in language-based interventions. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how intervention can be designed to increase client motivation to participate in therapy while improving language-based literacy skills. Motivation and behavior change techniques (Teixeira, 2020) based on self­determination theory will be presented. as will examples of how to integrate these techniques into interventions with adolescent clients to satisfy their need for autonomy, relatedness, and competence while simultaneously addressing language-based literacy deficits.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the three psychological needs that need to be satisfied for individuals to feel motivated to change and regulate their behaviors according to self-determination theory.

  • Describe ways in which satisfying these psychological needs promotes clients' intrinsic motivation.

  • Apply motivation and behavior change techniques in their own interventions.

Session Title: “Parkinsons Disease: Keep Moving”

Presenter(s): Carol and Charlie Clupney

Description: When Carol Clupny was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease at age 50, she slowed down, but she never stopped moving. She and her husband Charlie retired from lifetime careers as Speech-Language Pathologists and took to the road, literally, by walking ancient pilgrimage trails in France and Spain and riding bicycles to raise money for Parkinsons causes. In this presentation they will share their journey that started nearly 14 years ago with Carol's diagnosis, continues with her treatments and increases in difficulty as the symptoms advance.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Differentiate between motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinsons Disease

  • Describe common treatments for Parkinsons Disease

  • Identify parts of the brain affected by Parkinsons

  • Name possible team members and their contributions to the Parkinsons treatment

Session Title: “A Pediatric Pulmonologist’s Perspective ”

 

Presenter(s): Deborah Liptzin


Description: This session will discuss the overlap between pediatric pulmonology/Speech Therapy, aspiration, leftover cough and Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learners will recognize pediatric pulmonary diseases that would benefit from ST

  • Describe Differential diagnosis for Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction, leftover cough

Session Title: “8 Questions to Transform your Clinical Practice”

Presenter(s): Megan Berg

 

Description: In this session, we will explore the differences between the traditional medical model and the social/empowerment medical model. We will discuss how the level of health literacy is linked to the quality of patient outcomes and discuss how to use the social/empowerment model to interact with patients and set functional and person-centered therapy goals.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

  • Define the differences between the traditional medical model and the social/empowerment model.

  • Connect health literacy level to quality of outcomes.

  • Describe how to use the social/empowerment model to interact with patients and set functional, person-centered goals.

Session Title: “Current Issues for Service Delivery in Montana”

Faciliatator(s): Shelby Midboe, M.S., CCC-SLP

 

Description: This course will provide participants with the opportunity to discuss and learn about current challenges and solutions for service delivery across  different settings for both speech-language pathology and audiology. Topics include: 1)  Challenges with the changing COVID-19 landscape; 2) Benefits and barriers to the Interstate Compact Model; 3) Caseload/Workload models: limitations across clinical settings and strategies to move forward.  Participants will share their experiences and learn from others based on questions presented by group leaders.

 

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe different models of therapy implementation with current masking/PPE requirements for professionals and clients

  • Explain what the Interstate Compact is and how it could impact SLP/AuD licensing in Montana

  • Describe what models are used around the state to control caseload/workload sizes and  how effective they are in maintaining realistic intervention expectations.

Session Title: “Communication Solutions for Those with Hearing Loss and/or Speech Difficulties”

Presenter(s): TransVisible MT

 

Description: This presentation is created and facilitated by TransVisible Montana table members with the intention to create a “brave space” for folks to gain education regarding the challenges that misinformation and cisnormative systems create for transgender, non-binary, and two-spirit Montanans. Participants will learn what support is helpful in overcoming challenges, will be engaged in activities and discussions that deepen their understanding and comfort with pronouns and their use in introductions. Participants will explore gender as a fluid part of the human experience that expands beyond the binary, and identify effective and ineffective allyship qualities. Participants will also have the opportunity to collect physical TransVisible Montana resources such as posters, cards and handouts that will helpful in their continued practice of their newly acquired knowledge and allyship skills.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

  • Participants will be able to implement contemporary, inclusive language. 

  • Participants will explain how they can apply their knowledge of transgender and non-binary culture to work, home, school, and public environments. 

  • Participants will evaluate their own personal experiences and explore personal liberation from gender binary language.

Session Title: 25 Years of Cochlear Implantation in Montana:  Evolving Trends and the Integration of the Audiologist and Speech Pathologist

Presenter(s): Peter VonDoersten

 

Description: This session will summarize a 25 year trend in cochlear implantation in Montana, including novel technologies, evolving indications including for single sided deafness, and age limits.  It will highlight the role of the speech and language pathologist in the assessment and treatment of those with (or about to have) a cochlear implant, particularly with children.   It will also describe indications for cochlear implantation, limitations, and the risks. Most importantly, it will stress the importance of the ongoing and maturing relationship between the Neurotologist, Audiologist, and Speech and Language pathologist.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • The participant will recognize the trends and evolution of the technology behind cochlear implants.

  • The participant will explain the indications for and limitations of cochlear implants, including for single sided deafness

  • The participant will discuss why only a small percentage of eligible patients actually get implanted  

  • Participants will identify the role of the SLP and Audiologist in the pre and post operative assessment and treatment of people undergoing cochlear implantation

  • Participants will be able to give examples of the interpersonal practice for cochlear implantation.
