Brittan Barker:

Dr. Brittan Barker is an associate professor of audiology at Utah State University in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education and the director of the Aural Rehabilitation lab. Her lab conducts experimental and qualitative research with people of all ages and levels of hearing. These research efforts often overlap and are centered on a common goal: to provide human beings with the opportunity to effectively communicate with those around them. 

Brittan received a speaking fee from MSHA. Megan Berg:

Megan Berg, MA, CCC-SLP is the founder of Therapy Insights, a company that creates resources for rehabilitation clinicians rooted in evidence-based practice, person-centered care, health literacy and lifelong learning. She is based in Western Montana. Megan has no financial disclosures for this workshop. Megan is the owner of Therapy Insights.

 

 

Carol Clupney:

Carol was diagnosed with Young Onset Idiopathic Parkinson’s at age 50. This took her away from a meaningful career in Speech Pathology. Not being a person to sit long Carol took to traveling, volunteering with Parkinsons Resources of Oregon and The Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinsons.  She wrote The Ribbon of Road Ahead: One Woman’s Remarkable Journey with Parkinsons Disease  to inspire others to live life to its best.  Carol receives income from the sale of her book, The Ribbon of Road Ahead: One Woman's Remarkable Journey with Parkinson's Disease, Carlol received a speaking fee from MSHA

Charlie Clupney:

Charlie received his MS in Speech Pathology from Oregon College of Education. His first employment with Intermountain Education Service District lasted 33 1/2 years. The Oregon Speech and Hearing Association, where he served as secretary for 13 years, and was involved in many committees, bestowed upon Charlie the Honors of the Association. Charlie is now retired but continues to be active in community volunteerism. Charlie shared the speaking fee with Carol Clupney for this presentation.  He has no non-financial disclosures.

Ginger Collins:

Ginger Collins is an Associate Professor at the University of Montana in the School of Speech,

Language, Hearing, and Occupational Sciences. Dr. Collins' research focuses on school-based

interprofessional collaborative practices to promote language-literacy success and prevent academic

failure, with an emphasis of morphology, postsecondary transition planning, and effective pedagogy

in communication sciences and disorders. Ginger receives a salary from the University of Montana and a speaking fee from MSHA for this presentation. She has no non-financial disclosures.

Michael Crews:

Michael F. Crews, M.A., CCC-SLP was born and raised in Montana and loves living and working in the beautiful Big Sky Country. Michael obtained her Bachelor of Arts with a major in Communicative Sciences and Disorders and a minor in psychology in 1989 and her Master of Arts Dual degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in 1990 both from the University of Montana. Michael worked in the Community Medical Center Rehabilitation Center for 5 years, worked at a private practice for 11 years, and in 2007opened her own private practice, A Matter of Communication, Inc., which she continues to operate. Michael joined some other like-minded therapists in the field and together with their businesses formed Integrated TherapyWorks, LLC in 2011. The group has collaborated over the past 10 years in building the multi-disciplinary clinic to serve the rehabilitation needs of children through adults in our community.

Michael has specialized in working with youth through adult clients who struggle with cognitive-communication skills and it is her passion to treat and educate the clients, family/friends, and medical professionals who interact with them so that these individuals have the support needed to enhance their functional performance in all aspects of their lives. Michael also serves on the board of the Brain Injury Alliance of Montana (BIAMT) and is a member of Montana Speech Hearing Association (MSHA) and American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA) in order to continue to serve and build the field to meet the broad and ever-changing needs in our communities. Michael received a speaking fee from MSHA and has no non-financial disclosures.

 

Mary Coughlin:

Mary Coughlin NNP, MS, RNC-E is an inspirational speaker, motivational coach, and transformational consultant. 

A veteran of the United States Air Force Nurses Corps, Mary’s clinical background spans over 35 years as a seasoned staff nurse, charge nurse, neonatal nurse practitioner, hospital administrator and entrepreneur, Ms. Coughlin is currently the President and Founder of Caring Essentials Collaborative, LLC.  As a global leader in neonatal nursing, Ms. Coughlin has published extensively on the topic of trauma informed care for infants, families and clinicians.  Her scholarly work includes textbooks, book chapters and peer-reviewed papers. 

Most recently, Ms. Coughlin and her interdisciplinary faculty have created an assessment-based certificate program endorsed by the NIDCAP Federation International, the National Association of Neonatal Nurses, the Council of International Neonatal Nurses, and the National Association of Perinatal Social Workers, in accordance with standards established by the Institute for Credentialling Excellence, to distinguish individuals as Trauma Informed Professionals.  Her work has impacted more than 20,000 clinicians from as many as 20 different countries around the globe. Mary received a speaking fee from MSHA and has no non-financial disclosures.

 

Deborah Liptzen:

Deborah is a pediatric pulmonologist at Community Medical Center in Missoula She is an Association Clinical Professor at CU School of Medicine and UW School of Medicine as well as Associate Research Professor at University of Montana. Deborah is associated with grants from NIH and received a speaking fee from MSHA.  She has no non-financial disclosures. 

 

Tim Mackesey:

Tim Mackesey, CCC-SLP, BCS-F has a full-time private practice dedicated to stuttering. He is a Board Certified Specialist in Fluency Disorders and a Specialist Mentor per ASHA.  Tim had a severe stutter well into his 20’s.  He has been an SLP since 1992.  Tim taught the graduate-level Fluency Disorders course at Georgia State University.  Tim is a Master Practitioner of NLP and Neurosemantics.  He integrates leading-edge CBT into stuttering therapy.   He is an expert witness in litigation that involves stuttering post injury or in discrimination cases.  Tim has published several articles in peer-reviewed professional journals. His podcasts are at STUTTERING SOLUTIONS ATLANTA. Tim has no financial or non-financial disclosures.

 

Shelby Midboe:

Shelby Midboe, M.S., CCC-SLP, is the current MSHA President. She has been an SLP for 9 years, working primarily at Target Range School District in Missoula, MT. She also works PRN for skilled nursing and has been both adjunct faculty and a clinical supervisor for the University of Montana.  Shelby has been involved in leadership through MSHA and her local teacher’s union for the past 8 years, and recently completed her endorsement for Special Education Administration. Shelby will receive a conference registration waiver as the 2021 MSHA President. She has no non-financial disclosures.

Josilyn Ovenell:

Josilyn Ovenell, M.S., CCC-SLP is a sixth-generation Missoulian with a passion to serve those within the Missoula community. She achieved her Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from the University of Montana and her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Pacific University, which is a community-based program with an enriched medical focus. Josilyn has been working at Integrated TherapyWorks, LLC for 3 years, where she specializes in cognitive-communication rehabilitation across the entire lifespan.

Josilyn’s personal encounter with brain injuries along with her wide array of clinical experiences has inspired her to have a deep passion for the fields of cognitive rehabilitation, progressive neurological disorders, autism spectrum disorders, as well as behavioral and developmental disturbances. Josilyn’s greatest ambition as a Speech-Language Pathologist is to facilitate hope, healing, and growth in the lives of her clients. She aims to provide the highest level of care by helping her clients and their family members/caregivers achieve their patient-centered goals.  Josilyn received a speaking fee from MSHA and has no non-financial disclosures. 

 

Scott Palasik

Scott Palasik is an Associate Professor at the University of Akron, OH. He teaches two Graduate Stuttering Courses (Distance Learning and Campus Based), Voice Disorders and Cleft Palate, and Counseling at the graduate level. Scott also teaching undergraduate courses in Anatomy and Physiology, Articulation, and the Introduction to Disorders of Communication. Along with his teaching, Scott supervises graduate students with their clinical education and has served as an advisor and committee member on many graduate and undergraduate research projects. He has presented Internationally, Nationally, at the state and local levels about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, Active Listening and other topics related to stuttering and counseling. Scott is the co­-writer of the film WHEN I STUTTER (2017). He is also a co-host of the Act To Live Podcast and Blog. Scott received a speaking fee from MSHA. 

 

Peter VonDoersten: 

After graduating from Dartmouth University in 1984, Peter von Doersten attended Missouri Medical School in 1989. He completed an internship at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago as well as a general surgery internship at UC Davis. He then performed his residency in otolaryngology at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, California, and in 1996 he completed a fellowship in neurotology at Vanderbilt University. Dr. von Doersten has been Chief of Medical Staff at St. Patrick Hospital since 2008. He served as President of Montana Society of Otolaryngology from 2006-2010 and again from 2016-2018. He is on the faculty of the University of Washington ENT Department and he's an Adjunct Associate Professor at The University of Montana. He is a Managing Partner at Rocky Mountain ENT.  Dr. vonDorsten received a speaking fee from MSHA. He has no non-financial disclosures.

TransVisible Montana is a coalition of transgender, nonbinary & two spirit Montanans with allies from statewide organizations and local communities.
